With passing years, the implications of energy crisis is being understood. Biofuels are an important concept to this equation of decarbonized fuel sources. Second generation energy crops are increasingly becoming more viable in addressing this pressing need.
After years of R&D in various leading research institutions, both in Bangladesh and abroad, the prospects of jatropha were enhanced from a scientific perspective to be used as a source of low-emission fuel. Intellectual property was received for various methods of propagation.
Various financial support and research grants enabled the research to be highlighted in the personal and public labs, especially from the standpoint of economic and logistic feasibility, beyond basic scientific research in lab and greenhouse settings.
Recently, basic research in the lab has made it’s way to past pilot projects and onto limited use cases, such as use in engines for emissions tests, and for illumination purposes in lamps for rural areas. The prospects of biofuel for an agricultural region is limitless.
